If your home or office overhead lighting is not doing the trick, consider creating more indirect light with Torchiere lamps. Torchiere lamps are free standing floor lamps with open bowl like tops that create indirect light upwards. They have increased in popularity since being introduced in the early 1980’s. But there are some facts you need to be aware of before you buy one.
A Torchiere lamp uses a halogen bulb which gets extremely hot compared to a standard light bulb used in other floor lamps, table lamps or desk lamps. The heat generated from the halogen bulb has been known to ignite curtains, drapes and flooring. Because of this potential fire hazard, new legislation has been introduced regarding these lamps.
Torchiere lamps must know have wire or glass covering the halogen bulb. If you own an older style floor lamp, be sure to check to see if it has these. If not, it is recommended you throw it out and buy a new one. The good news is you can know find matching table lamps, desk lamps and floor lamps. Remember, keep all lighting away from curtains and bedding and be sure to turn your lamps off before leaving the house or going to bed.
